3.1 Volunteerism

Often times, I feel that there is a lack of volunteerism and civic engagement (of social, political, economical issues) among youths in Malaysia.
You can be sure that I would advocate for volunteerism and civic engagement (which I know will benefit youths innately) everywhere I find suitable :)

[Forgive me for my shorthand use of actual comments/msg that I've posted on FB as part of my blog post to convey my thoughts. This would be so much more efficient - since I would usually have said what I want to say in conversations - than waiting for me to draft an impeccable post about the same thing over again. I'm very anal of a perfectionist - I once saved about 300 draft posts in my previous blog.]
I know right? oh dumdum vienna :D *smack myself for my own stewpidity*

1) I have an idea!
i'm coming to barcamp!
  • lets go together?
  • btw, I have an idea.
  • to promote Volunteerism & a spirit of care in Malaysian society :)
  • (But i have not a single clue on how to develop a website in malaysia)
  • - the idea's modelled against something i have personally been through in Washington DC.
  • However, i have a farewell to attend on Sat 6.30pm onwards
  • IF i have to choose to pitch my idea on the 1st or 2nd day
  • which is more effective? - at speaking and mobilizing ppl?

      • woahhh...

      • i'll be going there early like 8am
      • and staying overnight till the 2nd day
      • you're welcomed to stay overnight with us too :)

      • Greater DC Cares has an excellent,
      • straightforward way of organizing volunteers
      • (I've personally went through the process) People can get orientated to become volunteers
      • through the website, search for days they want to volunteer for
      • they will find a list of organizations, actitivities,
      • and no. of volunteers needed,
      • once they sign up, the precise location and contact person information would be sent to them.
      • I intend this to be an umbrella body/website for all the charitable organizations in malaysia.
      • I would also want to Combine https://www.tisbest.org/ the idea of a Charity Gift Card
      • to this website.
      • Ie: for birthday presents, ppl can buy a RM30 charity gift card, give it to their friend, and their friend can choose to donate to any of the hundreds charity organizations that would be listed on the website itself.
      • (It is also of my wish that through this way, we could see ppl start to care about each other, realising the hhumanity and love that exist within each other, regardless of their race, age, eonomic status, i think this is a way forward to truly 1 Malaysia, and 1 Caring Malaysia.)

To materialize my goals, I have even found website designers to would help develop websites for non-profits organizations and causes for free. I'm providing their links here to anyone who might need such help too. :)

VOCR News - Voice of Chin RefugeesVOCR NewsVOCR News is an independent and non-profit news service focusing on Burma political issues and the Chin refugees in Malaysia. According to the UNHCR, there are more than 32,000 Burmese refugees registered in Malaysia. However, there are many more who are unregistered and the unofficial figure may well be more than half a million. These refugees ran away from their country to escape religious and political persecution but here in Malaysia they face a reality as hard as the one back home. They are fighting hard to obtain their refugee status by the local government. Not securing refugee status means their children cannot attend school and are deprived of education, they live in constant fear of the police & RELA officers, they are reduced to accepting underpaid jobs and are sometimes forced into hiding in the jungles to escape this hard reality.Services: web consultancy | customised blog creation | SEO

Hey Pei Hao, 1) Kechara Soup Kitchen www.kechara.com/?cat=634 (I've personally helped out there, brought my family (even 15 year old bro) and can testify that it was quite a learning experience for all of us to know that there are homeless people staying under the bridge with little to eat everyday, being treated as invisible in society's eyes & more realizations than I can express here) 2) Other than that, I'm also going to CHILD Malaysia in the following few days. http://www.child.org.my/ CHILD helps less advantaged children realize their potential and have the courage to dream; and to foster understanding and cooperation among children of all cultures in the spirit of love, compassion and reverence. CHILD achieves these objectives by providing educational assistance for the disadvantaged and less fortunate needy children and youths, irrespective of race, religion or creed. I will update you guys on what I learnt there and if its suitable for YS. 3) Ti-Ratana of course :D http://www.ti-ratana.org.my/ 4) Collaborate with Tzu Chi (I know they have community work, recycling, literary work, home visits, hospital visits, audio visuals, blessing, and so on weekly) There's a Subang Jaya chapter and the nearest office is in Kelana Jaya (which I've been to). There are plenty of youths there too :) I'll post more when I've give more thoughts into this. Please let me know how I can help you guys.y/ 4) Collaborate with Tzu Chi (I know they have community work, recycling, literary work, home visits, hospital visits, audio visuals, blessing, and so on weekly) There's a Subang Jaya chapter and the nearest office is in Kelana Jaya (which I've been to). About

The name Kalsom was adopted from an earlier initiative in the 90s.
Puan Kelthom Abdullah was a single mother struggling to make ends meet in Kelantan. Her children were forced to drop out of school, and her plight was given some media attention in 1993. Upon reading about her in the papers, a group of young Malaysian students in the UK decided to run a collection to help bear the education cost of her children.
For the initial group of students, it was not enough to merely collect money. They decided to take it a step further, spurred on by the conviction that they had a greater role to play. They decided that given their youth, and being students themselves, they were in an excellent position to help encourage and assist students from lesser-developed parts of Malaysia to excel in their studies. And so, during their summer holidays in the following year, they ran a motivational camp for the students of Jerantut, Pahang. It proved successful, and they decided to run it again the following year in Grik, Perak. The Projek Kalsom 16 held in summer 2010 also featured a homestay programme at Kampung Langkap, Setiu, Terengganu for facilitators, on top of the usual motivational programme.

"I'm here to work together with the students so that they can confidently find their purpose, motivation and role in this world, so that they can become successful and wholesome individuals. I'm not here to turn anyone into a "mini-me". I'm not perfect, and I believe they too can teach me a thing or two about life."

Hannah Nazri, Director of Projek Kalsom 17 2011. She was also facilitator for both Projek Kalsom 16 2010 and Projek Kalsom 15 2009.

Projek Kalsom has since been held annually, growing from strength to strength, and is now run with the full support of the Malaysian High Commission in London, Ministry of Education, and Ministry of Youth & Sports.

Projek Kalsom 17 will be held in Melaka from 11th to 15th July 2011.

Mercy Malaysia's our home bred medical relief organization aiding disasters worldwide.
This is for everyone (who can get orientated to become an official certified volunteer) but this is especially suited for my soon-to-be doctor folks. I've shared with some of you, but going on a 3 months missionary trip with Mercy Malaysia to rural areas in Sabah Sarawak etc (applicable even during your housemanship) will reward you with - at least - a month of leave. Other added benefits would be free helicopter rides, and adventure. (Reminds me of my thoughts to become one of those Médecins Sans Frontières-Doctors Without Borders, that's what I call A Doctor's Life! :D)
